Since the beginning of the conflict 11 years ago, the humanitarian situation in Syria is now worse than ever. This is due to the ongoing hostilities and violations of the International Humanitarian Law, the severe water and food crises, the economic and financial crises, COVID-19 pandemic, and continued access and protection challenges. The EU and Finland are co-hosting a Humanitarian Senior Officials Meeting today to discuss the worsening situation with humanitarian donors, NGOs, UN agencies, and Red Cross and Crescent Movement. Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič, who will deliver a speech today, said: “This year, the world marks the 11th anniversary of civil war in Syria. A tragic milestone for a conflict that has brought about incredible suffering and grief. More Syrians are now in desperate need of food assistance than ever before. The European Union continues to support Syrian people in need of aid, with over €25 billion mobilised in humanitarian, stabilisation and resilience assistance. The meeting today allows us to discuss how to deliver better amid the growing needs.'' During his mission to Finland, the Commissioner will also visit of the EU Centre of Excellence for Hybrid Threats, meet the Minister of Interior Krista Mikkonen and Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto.
