Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, is currently in Kyiv on a two-day mission to reaffirm the EU's strong support to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and its socio-economic resilience with a new financial assistance package, as announced by President von der Leyen. “We will continue to invest in the country's future through the Economic and Investment Plan for the Eastern Partnership. Through this Plan we aim to leverage for Ukraine up to €6.5 billion in investments to support the socio-economic recovery and development in the next years,” said Commissioner Várhelyi in Kyiv. Discussions focus on the benefits of the EU's Economic and Investment Plan for the sustainable economic growth and long-term recovery of Ukraine, by boosting connectivity, private sector development, economic transition for rural areas, energy efficiency and digital. The implementation of reforms and Ukraine's further integration with the EU on the basis of the Association Agreement feature also high on the agenda. Commissioner Várhelyi participated on 26 January in a meeting of the Ukrainian Government Coordination Commission for the Implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, chaired by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk. The Commissioner held bilateral meetings with President Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Shmyhal and Speaker Stefanchuk, Deputy Prime Minister Stefanishyna, representatives of civil society and national minorities. Today he continues his mission with a visit to the State Special Service for Communication and Information Protection and a meeting with the Prosecutor General. His trip will include a visit to the Memorial Wall dedicated to the victims of the Revolution of Dignity and the conflict in eastern Ukraine, as well as to the Babyn Yar memorial site to commemorate the Holocaust.
