Executive Vice-President Timmermans in Türkiye to strengthen cooperation on climate

Turkey visit

Today and tomorrow, Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, will be in Ankara to co-chair the 2nd EU-Turkey High Level Dialogue on Climate. In these times of turmoil generated by the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the EU and Turkey are working to increase cooperation on policies to tackle the climate crisis, including energy efficiency and the transition towards renewables. In the run-up to COP27 in Egypt later this year, the EU and Turkey will discuss their respective progress on domestic climate policies and the clean energy transition. The EU will encourage Turkey to present an enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution that is in line with the Paris Agreement and with Ankara's goal of climate neutrality by 2053. While in Ankara, Executive Vice-President Timmermans will also meet bilaterally with First Lady Emine Erdoğan, the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the Minister of Trade, Mehmet Muş, and the Minister of Climate, Environment and Urban Planning, Murat Kurum. He will also engage with local business organisations and NGOs.
