National public administrations, embassies and consulates share a common duty: assisting citizens in times of crisis. Today in Brussels, the European Commission's Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) Instrument, the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the U.S. Department of State are organising the first ever joint EU-US workshop on consular crisis management. The main objective of the workshop, which is funded by the EU Partnership Instrument (PI), is to exchange experiences on consular crisis interventions, share best practises and strengthen cooperation between EU countries and their partner countries. Specifically, the meeting will focus on cooperation between public and private sector, effective outreach to citizens travelling affected regions, as well as the use of social media – and other means of communication – before and during crises.

Disasters, whether natural or man-made, can have a variety of consequences that require specific and effective responses. To manage such crises, public and police authorities need immediate mobilisation of resources, along with adequate, timely and coordinated responses. In order to develop a broader understanding on the subject, the workshop will involve a range of stakeholders who can share their experiences alongside one another. These include U.S. diplomats, EU countries' public officials, EU institutions' staff, the British Red Cross, the Dutch Calamity Fund and the European Travel Agents' and Tour Operators' Associations.
