The High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell, will represent the Commission and participate today alongside President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in the International Conference in support of the Lebanese people, hosted by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, and the UN Secretary General, António Guterres. This meeting follows the Conference on 9 August, after the devastating explosion in Beirut port on 4 August. The EU reacted rapidly to the explosion and mobilised more than €70 million for first emergency and humanitarian needs, including for shelter, health and social protection, as well as social and economic recovery. The situation in Lebanon remains very fragile, with the explosion in Beirut and the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating the pre-existing political and socio-economic crises the country is facing. The Conference will take stock of the assistance provided following the 9 August Conference; work on possible additional donor efforts to support the population, and discuss the reconstruction of the port and revitalisation of destroyed and damaged areas. The EU stands together with the Lebanese people and will continue to deliver in support of a people-centred recovery. This requires all Lebanese stakeholders and political forces to allow the swift formation of a credible and accountable government, willing to implement necessary reforms.
