500 Ukrainian patients in need of continued treatment or urgent medical assistance have so far been transferred from Ukraine, Moldova and eu-neighbouring Member States to European hospitals through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The main host countries are currently Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania and Sweden. Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, said: "More than 500 Ukrainian patients in need of treatment and care have now been transferred to EU hospitals, thanks to EU solidarity mechanisms and the generosity of 13 EEA Member States and partners. This is genuine European solidarity in action. The EU has mobilised an assistance effort of unprecedented scale and speed to support and protect Ukraine and its people. Ukraine can continue to count on the EU's unwavering support. Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management, said: "As hospitals in Ukraine and neighbouring countries are under increasing pressure, we need to organise specialised treatments, both for patients with chronic diseases and for people injured during the war. The EU is working 24/7 to coordinate, through its Civil Protection Mechanism, medical evacuations of Ukrainian patients. As we now pass the milestone of 500 Ukrainian patients transferred to hospitals across Europe, I would like to thank all the countries that have made beds available to ensure that these patients receive the care they so urgently need. Once again, the EU is demonstrating its support for the most vulnerable. Together, we save lives. Transfers take place through the Solidarity Mechanism, a specific European system for medical transfers under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, ensures the secure transfer of patient data through the sharing of medical records via the Early Warning and Response System (ARPS). It also allows the Commission to report to the Ukrainian authorities where patients have been transferred to EU/EEA countries. More information can be found here.
