Ukraine: Two new Eurydice reports provide insights on support measures for refugee pupils and students

Today, the Commission’s Eurydice Network published the reports “Supporting refugee learners from Ukraine in schools in Europe” and “Supporting refugee learners from Ukraine in higher education in Europe”. These reports provide an overview of the initiatives taken in European education systems to support the millions of refugees from Ukraine and facilitate their rapid and successful integration in their host countries. They also show the wide range of policies and measures, which were put in place to support refugee learners. Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said: “We see that many education systems across the EU have developed new policies and measures responding to the educational needs of newly arrived learners from Ukraine. Some are also providing guidance and support for addressing the learners’ psychosocial support needs. This is positive news, and a reflection of the work we have been doing to coordinate efforts on national and regional level. Today’s Eurydice reports are additional food for thought for authorities who are considering policy responses.” In general education, findings show that reaching out to families arriving from Ukraine and ensuring that their children enroll into schools is a priority. Most education systems have reacted rapidly with policy initiatives supporting learners in schools. In higher education, the most common support measures in place are host language training or support, psychological counselling, academic guidance, introductory courses, as well as financial support and reserved study places.
