SME Performance Review

SME

Background and context

The EU promotes enterprise policies and industrial strategies designed to boost competitiveness within the Union. These seek to:

  • expedite structural adjustment
  • foster an environment conducive to business creation and to domestic and inward foreign investment
  • promote small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs)
  • promote entrepreneurship
  • encourage innovation.

The SME performance review is one of the main tools the European Commission uses to monitor and assess countries' progress in implementing the SME Strategy and the Small Business Act (SBA). With an emphasis on the priorities under the SME Strategy and the SBA, the review brings comprehensive information on the performance of SMEs in EU countries and other partner countries. It consists of two parts: an annual report on European SMEs and SME fact sheets.

SΜΕ fact sheets

The SME fact sheets assess national progress in implementing the Small Business Act. SME fact sheets are also prepared by the European Commission annually for third countries that participate in the COSME programme, to benchmark their performance against EU member states’ average. Below you will find the SME fact sheets prepared for countries covered by DG NEAR. These fact sheets can also be found on DG GROW’s website.
