Today Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, Olivér Várhelyi was in Paris to represent the European Union in the Third Ministerial Conference of the Moldova Support Platform.
Commissioner Várhelyi outlined the EU’s €250 million support to Moldova to tackle the energy crisis as announced by President Von Der Leyen in Chisinau on 10 November. In addition, he focused on the Energy Rescue Scheme for Moldova, proposed by the European Commission together with the Energy Community Secretariat and on the Commission’s support of €25 million for EU humanitarian aid operations in Moldova.
During the conference, the Commissioner met with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu and members of President Macron’s team.
“Through the Moldova Support Platform, the EU and its partners are actively supporting Moldova to face the energy crisis and the humanitarian consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine,” said Commissioner Várhelyi. “We have created a new €250 million package of energy support to help Moldova meet its energy needs, fight energy poverty, and increase its energy security.
Furthermore, an innovative Energy Rescue Scheme set up by the Energy Community Secretariat will help partners across the international community to swiftly channel additional financial support to Moldova to deal with the energy crisis during the following months. Moldova, an EU candidate country, is part of the European family. The EU continues to support Moldova in addressing the multiple challenges and at the same time unequivocally support the country on its European path.”
France, Germany and Romania initiated the Moldova Support Platform to help the country deal with the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Support Platform also aims to offer Moldova support from partners in its reform path following its application for EU membership.
