Roma integration continues to be a key priority in the enlargement process. The European Commission encourages the work done by individuals and civil society in the Western Balkans and Turkey to improve the social inclusion of Roma. One of the initiatives to support this important work is the EU Award for Roma Integration which was launched in 2014. The aim of this award is to highlight the political importance of Roma integration in the EU enlargement process, to enhance the role of key players (e.g. civil society, Roma youth, Roma women) and to show the EU's determination and commitment to enhance social inclusion of Roma people.

This year’s third edition of the EU Award for Roma Integration is dedicated to individual Roma women grassroots activists who brought significant changes to their communities. Out of 105 applications, 14 nominated Roma women were selected for their contributions to the inclusion, integration and empowerment of Roma in their communities and societies.

The winners of the first and second prize will be announced during an official award ceremony on 19 March in Brussels, hosted by the European Commission. The award ceremony will take place in the framework of the 4th EU Roma Week (18 – 21 March 2019).
